People who receive benefits in Sunderland and other parts of the UK will see changes in their payment dates over Christmas and New Year.

The past couple of years have seen Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day falling on weekend dates.

But with Christmas Day and New Year's Day falling on a Monday this year, and Boxing Day falling on a Tuesday, there will be effectively a four-day weekend followed by a three-day weekend for households in England.

The Government's 'How and when your benefits are paid' web page notes if your payment date is on a weekend or a bank holiday, you’ll usually be paid on the working day before - though this may be different for tax credits and Child Benefit.

This would a see majority of benefit payments made on Friday, December 22.

This will also be the case for Tax Credit payments, which can often follow a different payment pattern.

Anyone who is expected to get their payment between Christmas Day and Wednesday, December 27, will get their payments on Friday, December 22, while anyone expecting their payment on Thursday, December 28, will get their payment one day early.

With December 30 and December 31 coming on a weekend in 2023, payments are expected to be paid on Friday, December 29.

This is also the case for Tax Credit payments.
