What we know about Sunderland managerial target Derek McInnes from tactics to experience

Derek McInnes is the new favourite to be appointed Sunderland manager - but what do we know about the Scot?

We take a look at the man in the frame to succeed David Moyes in the Stadium of Light hotseat.

1. Championship experience

McInnes has experience of the Championship, albeit not entirely happy memories. He took charge of Bristol City in October 2011 with the Robins adrift at the bottom of the table but McInnes guided City to an eight-game unbeaten run that secured their league status.

However, he couldn't build on that and the next season was sacked in January with City eight points adrift at the bottom.

2. Scottish success

McInnes made his name as manager of St Johnstone, where he guided them to promotion to the SPL in his first full season in charge. He then kept them in the top flight before moving to Bristol City.

After he was sacked by the Robins, he was appointed Aberdeen boss in 2013 and has gone on to establish them as Celtic's closest rivals, finishing runners-up in three successive seasons.

3. Silverware

McInnes' best moment so far at the Dons has been lifting the Scottish League Cup in 2014. It was their first trophy in 19 years and they also qualified for Europe that campaign. He was named PFA Scotland Manager of the Year and SFWA Manager of the Year.

4. Tactics

McInnes has brought great success to Aberdeen with an intense style of play that puts pressure on the opponents. They press high up the pitch and snap into tackles, while they're also not afraid to get the ball in the box from wide areas.

5. McInnes the player

Again, the 45-year-old Scot has Championship experience, leading West Brom to promotion in 2002 as captain of the Baggies. He was a hard-working, tough midfielder with strong leadership qualities, and picked up two full Scotland caps late in his career.
