West Rainton's Kat Driscoll secured a fifth-place finish in the Olympics

Alas, it was not Kat Driscoll making the piece of history – the feat belonged to GB colleague Bryony Page, who clinched the runner-up position. But it was a day for the West Rainton girl to savour after finishing sixth in her first Olympic final.

There will doubtless be thoughts of “what if” in her mind after witnessing Page’s performance of a lifetime.

However, Kat’s achievement very much stands on its own and when the dust settles there should be great satisfaction for the 30-year-old who finished ninth in London, missing out on the final by 0.001 points.

This time the Apollo gymnast left no room for doubt by qualifying for the final in fifth place with a total of 100.295.

Page also reached the coveted top eight, going through in seventh.

The finalists competed in reverse order, with Bryony going second, brilliantly executing a challenging routine to score 56.040.

Kat was the fourth girl onto the trampoline and scored 53.645 to go, briefly, into the silver medal position.

It left Driscoll watching and waiting and, unfortunately, the remaining four competitors overtook her to end in sixth.

But only one girl eclipsed Page, Canada’s Rosannagh Maclennan compiling a score of 56.465 to bag the gold medal.

It remained a day to be proud of for Kat but, thanks to Bryony, it was a day to remember for Britain.

Page said: “After my performance I was just so happy because that was the best I could have done on that day, and then finding out I’d got a medal, I couldn’t hold my legs up, I collapsed and I was crying my eyes out.

“When I found out I got the silver I was shell-shocked, it’s just absolutely incredible.”
