This week saw a sprinkling of snow hit the North East with flakes falling across Sunderland throughout the weekend with additional flurries on Thursday. With plenty more cold days expected before the end of the year, we’ve taken a look at when Sunderland can next expect snow.

When is snow forecast for Sunderland?

Unfortunately for those hoping for a sprinkling of the white stuff in the next couple of days, very little is expected over the coming day or so, despite the cold weather. The Met Office is predicting a cloudy series of days leading into next week with yellow weather warnings for ice on Sunday, December 18. Small showers are predicted on Sunday evening but it will likely be too warm for it to fall as snow.

The weather service’s long-term forecast is looking slightly better for those wanting to see snow settle in December though. For the period from Wednesday, December 21, to Friday, December 30, predictions claim some wintry showers may be experienced in northern areas with any heavier snow currently expected to remain on hills and other high areas.

Occasional wintry showers are expected closer to Christmas Day, although wet weather could also fall as rain rather than snow with temperatures expected to rise slightly.

The BBC’s forecast is similar to the Met Office’s with no further show showers expected throughout the coming days with low temperatures but no snow and any precipitation more likely to fall as rain.

Could Sunderland get a white Christmas in 2022?

Sunderland’s closest weather station, Newcastle Airport, has been given 9/2 odds from bookmakers for a white Christmas. This is defined as one snowflake being seen falling, meaning the chance of any snow settling over Christmas is slim.

The Met Office claims that confidence remains low for the Christmas period due to the long-term nature of the forecast. There is a chance the service’s predictions could change with the organisation claiming predictions are more reliable ten days or less in advance. We will only know a full hour-by-hour prediction from the weather service from Monday, December 19.
