Forecasters predict temperatures will hover around freezing for much of the region on Tuesday, December 29, following a separate yellow warning issued at the weekend.

The worst of the Met Office’s weather warning for the North East will come overnight, between 6pm today and 10am on Tuesday.

Some areas of the north of England may even expect a covering of snow due to the wintry showers forecast, with 10cm expected over the Pennines.

Sunderland, however, looks set to miss the majority of the icy weather in store for the North East.

Temperatures of between 1°C and 5°C are forecast for Wearside tomorrow – but it’s expected to feel colder, between -2°C and 1°C, for much of the day.

It will be a cloudy day with some spells of sunshine – and there is no snow forecast just yet.

"Wintry showers may give a covering of snow in places with up to 10cm over the Pennines.”

The Met Office has advised the public to expect continued disruption to roads and rail routes, with the possibility of longer journey times, as well as further icy patches on untreated roads and pavements.

As the region progresses through the rest of the week, temperatures are expected to improve slightly, with sunny spells forecast and the likelihood of wintry showers reduced.
