The Environment Agency has issued flood warnings for much of the North East coast today, Thursday, November 19.

And though the warnings do not extend as far as Sunderland, city council chiefs are still urging people to take care, with fears that the surging tides may swamp part of the city’s seafront footpath.

A message on the council’s Facebook page warns people about the risk of waves topping over the sea wall at Roker in particular: “There will be high tides between 5.53am and 6.07pm so please avoid Marine Walk,” it says.

“Due to dangerous weather conditions, the high tide and waves may top over and spray along Marine Walk.”

The sea wall at Marine Walk is one of the lowest points of Sunderland’s sea defences and the area regularly bears the brunt of bad weather.
