New weather warning issued for Sunderland as Storm Bert set to unleash his wrath

The snow and ice is set to be followed by stormy conditions as the Met Office has issued a weekend Yellow Weather Warning for Sunderland as Storm Bert is set to bring winds in excess of 50mph to batter the city.

The warning for strong winds is in place from 5am to 7pm on Saturday November 23.

A statement on the Met Office website said: “Storm Bert will bring strong winds for a time on Saturday, which may cause some disruption in places.

“It’s likely that some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and large waves.

“There is also likely to be some travel disruption with some bus and train services affected and some journeys taking longer

“Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges is likely whilst some short term loss of power and other services is possible.”

The current forecast breakdown for Sunderland on Saturday shows the strongest winds across the morning, peaking at 54mph at around midday before gradually starting to ease through the afternoon and evening.

Heavy rain is also expected throughout the morning and into the early afternoon.

Before wrath of Storm Bert an extended Met Office Yellow Weather Warning is now in place for snow and ice to effect the city from midday today (November 21) to 10am tomorrow.

A statement on the Met Office website said: “Wintry showers and icy patches are expected this evening and overnight, perhaps leading to some travel disruption.”

Temperatures in Sunderland today will rise to just three degrees Celsius falling below freezing once again overnight.
