Wearside League: Silksworth's last-gasp Cook dishes up a blow to Richmond title hopes

Richmond slipped from second place to third with the home defeat at Earls Orchard, as Silksworth consolidated fourth place in the table.

The Dalesmen went in front through Liam Darville’s effort, but Chris Thompson levelled things up at 1-1, helped by a deflection from Simon Pinkney, in the second half.

Silksworth kept battling to the final minute, with Josh Perry their man of the match, and got their reward when James Cook tapped home a winner four minutes into stoppage time.

Victory, Silksworth’s 17th of the season in an impressive league campaign, moved Andy Stobbart’s side within four points of Richmond.

The Yorkshire side now trail leaders Jarrow by 12 points, albeit still with four games in hand - with 13 matches to play in comparison to Jarrow’s nine.

The table-topping Perth Green outfit romped to a 9-1 success at Seaham Red Star Reserves, who slumped to second-bottom spot following the defeat.

Josh Allen grabbed a sixth-minute opener, and Jonny Hirst made it 2-0 before Marc Ruddick pulled one back on 25 minutes.

Jarrow were 4-1 up by the break, though as Hirst and Allen struck again.

The dominance continued, with the wind advantage on the restart as Hirst bagged two more goals to take his tally fo four. Gordon Hutchinson added an eight-minute brace, and Allen completed his hat-trick two minutes from time.

Sunderland West End went down to a third successive one-goal defeat, completing a disappointing eight-day spell.

Redcar Athletic took the spoils 2-1 at Ford Quarry to move back into second place in the table.

West End, looking to bounce back from the midweek loss at Harton and Westoe CW, did take the lead through Reece Thompson, but Adam Preston hauled the Seasiders level after half-time and Sam Garvie hit their winner in the 82nd minute.

Ashbrooke Belford House returned to action and succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat to South Shields Reserves.

The all-important goal came from the penalty spot after 50 minutes, when Ollie Martin notched.

The victory took Shields up to ninth place.

Boldon CA stayed fifth after a 1-0 away success at bottom club Harton & Westoe.

The winning goal in the South Tyneside derby came after 38 minutes, when goalkeeper Kevin Garrett dropped the ball at the feet of Adam Bell, who duly finished off from close range.

Sixth-placed Coxhoe Athletic’s good run of form ended with a 2-1 defeat at home to lowly Wolviston.

Wolviston secured a second successive away triumph thanks to two goals from man of the match Junior Masandi in the first half.

Michael Summerson pulled a goal back for the Beechfield Park outfit in the second half, but Wolviston held on and are now out of the bottom three.

Windscale slipped to third-bottom spot after losing out 1-0 to a stoppage-time goal at Prudhoe Town, following David Wansell’s flying header.

Darlington 1883 Reserves maintained their outstanding run with a comfortable 2-0 home success against Leam Rangers, who had Anthony Brewis sent off.

Goals from Anthony Verity and Nathan Stephenson - scoring from the centre circle with Leam’s keeper well out of goal, claiming a foul - secured a sixth straight victory for the Quakers, who are now up to seventh place in the table.

Darlington are sure to make life tough for leaders Jarrow this coming weekend, despite going down 4-0 to Dave Bell’s side at the start of January.

Annfield Plain edged home 3-2 in an entertaining Derwent Park clash with Stokesley SC, moving them level on points with the Yorkshire side.

Star man Carl Malpass, Lewis Donnelly and Aaron Wilkinson all got on the scoresheet, with Anthony Barnes and Jordan Rivis replying.
