We need a town crier

There is a lot of enthusiastic planning and intense work to do in preparing the City of Sunderland into a strong position to become the next City of Culture.

It will surprise a lot of you to know; tourism contributes £115billion annually to the British economy. It employes more than 10% of the national workforce. It’s the fifth biggest industry and our third largest export earner.

This is where to focus our future endeavours.

Now with a new bridge under construction we are opening the road to more visitors to Wonderland’s Sunderland.

The world will come to admire our new wonder when it opens in 2018.

However, I do strongly feel we must follow great successful town and cities in Great Britain by electing an official town crier.

This is a colourful tradition and authentic, living history. A truly great tourist attraction.

Britain has 200 criers now, so why is Sunderland without one?

It’s a crying shame.
