We deserve answers

The refusal of the council leader, Paul Watson, to reveal details of the severance package to the former Chief Executive Dave Smith raises serious questions about trust, accountability and transparency within Sunderland council.

These severance packages in the public sector have got out of hand in recent years and the people who pay for them, the council taxpayer, have the right to know how their hard-earned cash is being spent.

There are two serious questions that Mr Watson needs to answer.

Firstly, did the Chief Executive resign voluntarily, and if he did, why was a severance package necessary?

Secondly, if he was forced out what were the circumstances or issues that forced this exit and why was a severance deal necessary?

In a few weeks’ time the council will announce rises in council tax of about 4% with 2% of it being ring fenced for social care.

I don’t mind paying that but I want to know that my money is not being spent in a cavalier fashion.

I would urge people who feel the same way to write to the council and under the Freedom Of Information Act demand to know the details.
