WATCH: Sunderland star reveals cup hopes and Wembley dream
Goalkeeper Rachael Laws insists her Sunderland Ladies possess the right mentality to achieve their dreams of playing at Wembley, after being drawn against heavyweights Arsenal in the SSE Women's FA Cup semi-finals.
The Lady Black Cats will travel to Boreham Wood a week on Sunday after breezing past Reading with a 3-0 win in the last eight on Sunday.
They face a Gunners side who had to rely on penalties to send them through to the next round after drawing 2-2 with Notts County after extra-time, but who are also the most successful side in the competition’s history with 13 titles to their name.
And as Sunderland bid to reach their first FA Cup final since 2009, 25-year-old Laws, who is in the England squad for the coming Euro qualifying double header, insists confidence is high in the Sunderland camp.
“The last four teams are obviously four very good ones and whoever we played out of the top three from last season, it was going to be a very difficult game and I think we will probably take Arsenal away,” said Laws, who hails from Hebburn.
“It is a good draw for us and we go there with the right mentality and I think we can come away with a result.
“Hopefully our front three, as well as the rest of the team, can perform, but you have to look at Beth Mead to stand out for us again this season,” she added.
Sunderland had an amazing first season in FA WSL 1, finishing fourth last year.
And despite facing a tough challenge against the 13-time SSE Women’s FA Cup winners, Laws admits it would be a dream come true to walk on to the hallowed Wembley turf.
“It would be unbelievable to go to Wembley, as a little girl you always dream of playing at Wembley and for the SSE Women’s FA Cup it is massive.
“We did well in WSL last season, but we thought why not do the same in the cup. We’re in the semi-final now, so why can’t we push on and get to that final and do well.
“To go there and be there as an occasion and an event, it would be fantastic, but extra icing on the cake would be to lift the cup as well.”
