This week we look back at photographs from the city's Hendon and East End carnival which will hopefully bring back lots of happy memories.

It was reported in the Sunderland Echo back in 2004 that the East End carnival can officially trace its roots back nearly 100 years and is thought to have its roots in a gypsy fair from hundreds of years ago.

It traditionally takes place on the Town Moor for one weekend in July, but was suspended during the Second World War and then revived in 1972 to tie in with the two-week shipyard holiday shutdown.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any photographs in our archives from that far back, but hopefully the ones pictured here will make you smile.

We have pictures from the 1970s through to the present century showing what a fantastic time people had at the carnival.

What can you tell us about the organisers and helpers?

Were you one of them? Why not let us have your memories.
