There are lots of activities available this month at the Life House, Columbia. If reading is your thing go along to the book club, which meets the first Wednesday of the month between 2pm and 3pm. On Wednesdays, between 10am and 11am, there are guided meditation sessions. Meditation is a focussed mental activity that is proven to help people relax. One of the easiest ways to learn how to focus the mind is to listen to guided meditations, which incorporates the spoken word, relaxing sounds and music. Potential benefits include improvement of ability to think clearly, decrease anxiety, decreasing depression and enjoyment of a more positive outlook. Jittabugs is one for the little ones, babies aged from six weeks to crawling stage, starting tomorrow from 1pm to 1.45pm. From 2pm to 2.4 pm, there is preschool Move and Groove for ages from standing to five years. Cost £2 per session.

Family Christmas food is the topic for a six-week programme starting Tuesday, November 8, from 4pm to 6pm at the Life House. This activity brings people together to create Christmas goodies which the whole family can enjoy. Open to adults and children , but children must be accompanied by an adult. Session cost £4 per family and £2 for individuals.

Starting Monday, November 7, are board games sessions at the Life House from 1pm to 3pm at a cost of £2 per session. This facilitated activity brings good old fashioned fun to the Life House.

A couple of Barmston residents have arranged a litter pick in the Barmston area as part of the Keep Washington Tidy project. Any volunteers or support will be welcome.Meet at the top of Burnhope Road at 10am on Friday, November 11.

Beginners ukulele lessons are a new activity at the Arts centre Washington starting on Wednesday, September 9, between 10.30am and noon .Cost is £4.50 per session and instruments are available. To book a place, call 0191 5613455 .

Sunderland Art Club exhibition is now in progress at the arts centre until December 3.

Voted best play in the 2015 NODA awards, Matchbox Theatre is presenting Humble Boy on Thursday and Friday at 7.30pm again at the arts centre.

Starting on Friday there is an exhibition, The Materialistics, featuring a range of knitted, sewn and crocheted works of art, created by experts and novices at the arts centre.

Saturday at the Arts Centre, between 10.30am and 3.30pm, the monthly craft fair will take place.

Awards came thick and fast at the Rotary Club of Washingtons Club meeting recently, when guests included MP for Washington and Sunderland West Sharon Hodgson, Teenage Cancer Trust’s Ambassador 17-year-old Phoebe Hedley and Washington Athletic FC Manager, Terry Rutherford. Sharon was presented with the Rotary Pin by president Keith Peacock, signifying that she is now an honorary member of The Rotary Club of Washington. Phoebe Hedley and Terry Rutherford were presented with the 2016 Community Service Awards, which recognizes the dedication and continual commitment in improving the lives of others. Phoebe, who has been fighting cancer for a number of years, said she felt she had to give something back to the RVI T C T ward and to date has raised £8,000. Terry Rutherford spends his leisure time providing community football, through his club Little Champs, from seven-year-olds to 12 years.

On Saturday at 7.30pm you can see Martin Simpson at the Davy Lamp folk club. Martin won the BBC Radio 2 musician of the year along with numerous other awards.
