The Black Cats survived a second-half power cut, and the occasional scare at the back, to make it back-to-back wins to move to just three points from safety.

Jermain Defoe set his side on their way with his 150th Premier League goal 11 minutes before half-time with some neat footwork and good finish with his left boot.

But the second half was the Anichebe show as two decisive finishes took the hosts to their first league win at the Stadium of Light, though Jordan Pickford deserves praise for some excellent saves.

"I thought there were chances at both ends," said Moyes.

"Hull had opportunities, but we had a goalkeeper on top of his game and two forwards who, when the ball falls to them, look as though they are going to score.

"It wasn't always great between the boxes but we had a keeper and two centre-forwards in great form.

"Victor was immense today, probably even better than he was last week [at Bournemouth].

"He's got the capability of doing this."

Sunderland's fans have taken to the 28-year-old and the feeling seems mutual.

Anichebe dominated play, not just in front of goal but in his work outside the box.

"Victor was terrific," added Moyes who brought his former Everton striker to Wearside AFTER the transfer deadline day.

"He needs to be loved and think the supporters are helping him.

"He likes it here and I hope they keep backing him.

"Victor is a handful on his day, a real powerful figure who is bringing goals."

There was a mixture of groans and cheers after the lights went out at the stadium five minutes into the second half.

But when they came back on it was Anichebe who lit up Wearside with a memorable brace.
