Victim taken to hospital with 'serious injuries' after suspected attack in Sunderland street

Emergency services vehicles were seen in Helvellyn Road, Grangetown, in response to the incident, which was reported shortly after 10.30am.
Northumbria Police confirmed to the Echo that it was contacted about an assault by the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS).
A 32-year-old man is now in hospital with serious injuries.

Hide AdA spokeswoman said: “It is believed he was attacked on Pretoria Square before leaving the scene and attending an address on Helvellyn Road.”
A NEAS spokeswoman added: “We were called at 10.35am this morning [Sunday] to an incident at a private address in Helvellyn Road in Sunderland.
“Police also attended the scene. We sent four resources, including the air ambulance, and took two patients to hospital.”
Residents in Helvellyn Road and the neighbouring Haildon Road watched on as the emergency services arrived, spending around three hours in the street.

Hide AdOne 61-year-old man said he saw the ambulance service arrive at a semi-detached house, followed by police and more paramedics a short time later.
He believes a woman and man were injured during the incident, and added: "The ambulance went in and then the police all ran in a while later.
"CID, everybody was here and about five police cars, then two other unmarked cars flew past.
"Nobody said what's happened and we've never had any bother in this street."
