Unconscious man rescued from boat at Sunderland docks

A man was taken to hospital after he was found ill and injured while on board a boat moored at the Port of Sunderland.

The North East Ambulance Service, Sunderland RNLI and Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team were called out to Greenwell’s Quay shortly after 8am today, Sunday, September 27, after reports a man had been found unconscious and had suffered a fall.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard said: “Coastguard officers, including one who is a paramedic in his day job, provided casualty care to the male who on our arrival had regained consciousness.

"We then extracted him from the vessel and handed him over to the ambulance crews for further care.”

The RNLI said it used its D Class inshore lifeboat to reach the scene.

A spokesperson added: “Our volunteers quickly launched the lifeboat and arrived on the scene, where thankfully they were joined by Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team who had already arrived.

"An officer from the team who is also a paramedic provided casualty care to the injured person onboard the boat.

"Thankfully the injuries sustained after the casualty had fallen were not as serious as first reported.

"The casualty was taken off the vessel and into the care of ambulance personnel.

"Our crew was then stood down to return to station.”

The ambulance service confirmed it was alerted to the incident at 8.11am and sent two Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART) and an ambulance to the incident.

It took the man to Sunderland Royal by ambulance for further treatment.
