Two taken to hospital after multi-vehicle road accident in Sunderland

Two people were taken to hospital after a multi-vehicle traffic accident in Sunderland.

The incident took place near the junction of Ettrick Grove and Mount Road, in the Barnes area, this afternoon.

Four people were injured, and while two were treated by paramedics at the scene, two of them were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital. Their condition is currently unclear.

The carriageway was blocked for a time after the accident.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at 1.14pm and dispatched three ambulances, a rapid response paramedic and a crew from our hazardous area response team.

“We had four patients in total.

“Two were treated on the scene, and two were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.”

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesman: “Two crews from Farringdon and one from Sunderland Central attended the scene.

“The time of call was 1.18pm, and when crews arrived, everyone involved had been self-rescued and were being treated by paramedics.

“The fire crews made the vehicles safe.”
