Two arrests after woman injured in fall from third floor of Sunderland flats

Police were called to The Royalty flats, off Durham Road, after the 23-year-old fell more than 20ft from the third floor of the building.

She was taken by ambulance to Sunderland Royal Hospital with injuries to her back and legs.

Officers, who are investigating the incident, arrested two men aged 26 and 28 years old on suspicion of assault and have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Police say the woman suffered her injuries sometime between 1.50pm and 1.55pm on Saturday.

One woman who lives in the flats, but did not want to be named, told the Echo: “I was in at the time, but I didn’t see exactly how it happened.

“I saw afterwards with the emergency services outside.

“It’s usually dead quiet around here so it’s not something you expect to happen.”

A woman aged 48 who works in a shop near the flats said: “I heard about it and there a few theories going around as to exactly what happened.

“I was in at the time and there were about five or six police cars, as well as an ambulance to take her to hospital.

“It’s quite shocking really.”

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called to an incident in Chester Road near to the Royalty Theatre which happened between 1.50pm and 1.55pm on Saturday, January 30.

“A woman had fallen from the third floor window of a flat and sustained injuries.

“The 23-year old was taken by ambulance to Sunderland Royal Hospital with back and leg injuries.

“Officers are investigating the incident and two men aged 26 and 28 years were arrested on suspicion of assault and have been bailed pending further enquiries.”
