Two arrested after man shot in leg on Sunderland playing field

A man was shot in the leg with an air weapon as he crossed a field on a Wearside housing estate.

At 1.15pm yesterday, police received a report a man had been shot in the leg while he was on King George Playing Fields in Palgrove Road, in Pennywell, Sunderland.

He was not seriously injured.

Officers attended and it was established the weapon involved was an air weapon.

A 21-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman have been arrested in connection with the incident and have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Neighbourhood Inspector Lisa Laverick said: "We take reports of this nature very seriously and while the weapon involved was an air weapon it has still caused the man to be injured albeit not seriously.

"Officers attended and two people - a man and a woman - were quickly arrested.

"Our inquiries will continue and I'd ask anyone who may have information to get in contact.

"Air weapons are not toys, they can cause injury and should only be used responsibly, for the purpose for which they're intended."
