Nicholas Rennie, 37, from Washington Village, enjoys weight training, cycling and circuit training. He said: “Sometimes I lack the energy and motivation to stick to my training plan. I thought it would help my motivation if I was working towards a difficult personal challenge that could benefit others. “

A work colleague mentiond that a friend of hers had lost a child to cancer and suggested Nicholas should raise money for the children’s cancer ward at the RVI. He decided to do a 70km triathlon.

In five-and-a-half hours, he cycled from Washington to Consett and back again, swam 1.6 km in Washington baths, followed by a run to Sunderland.

He raised £1005 thanks to sponsorship from Dent-Tek (Durham), Pizzamatic (Hetton), Rennie School of Motoring, Washington Boxing Club and staff and directors of Utilitywise PLC.
