Woman taken to hospital following early morning police incident on A19

A woman has been taken to hospital after police were called to the A19 in the early hours of the morning following concerns for her welfare.

Officers were called to the A19 flyover near Castle Eden at around 5am today, Wednesday, August 12, following concerns for the welfare of a woman.

The woman was found by police and paramedics attended before she was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Highways England said that the A19 southbound was closed during the police incident, with the closure affecting the area by the A181 between Castle Eden and Wingate.

Highways England has confirmed the road has since reopened.

A Durham Constabulary spokeswoman said: “Police were called to the A19 flyover near Castle Eden shortly after 5am this morning following concerns for the welfare of a woman.

“The woman was located and paramedics attended and transported her to Sunderland Royal Hospital.”
