Warning to drivers over partial closure of A19 Durham Road roundabout

One of Sunderland’s busiest road junctions will be closed partially overnight this week.

A section of the roundabout between Durham Road and the A19 southbound entry slip road will be closed between 7pm and 6am from tonight, Monday, November 23, to Thursday as part of ongoing improvement work.

Access to the A19, B1286 City Way and A690 westbound towards Durham will be prohibited from the A19 southbound off-slip and out of town A690/B1286 during this period.

A full diversion route via Chester Road and Herrington Road will be in place.

Access to the city centre (eastbound) from this junction will be unaffected and access to residential properties will be maintained.

The closure is necessary for ongoing work that will add extra lanes, new signalling, and improvements to the junction's drainage, fencing and kerbing.Sunderland City Council deputy leader Coun Paul Stewart said: "As a council we are committed to continually upgrading and improving our highways network for residents and businesses.

"This work is being carried out overnight to minimise disruption and I would like to thank drivers and local residents for their patience as we complete this important upgrade to our city's infrastructure."
