Vandalism, staffing issues and pandemic lead to cancellations on the Metro system

Monday morning rush hour Metro services have been hit by a series of issues causing delays and cancellations.

One of its first services, at 5.36am between Pelaw and St James, was cancelled due to vandalism, with work to be carried out to get the train back into service.

It was also confirmed there was a gap in the service of up to 15 mins between South Shields and South Gosforth due to a train being withdrawn.

The incidents followed from a warning that throughout today, Monday, August 24, some services had been cancelled “due to staff availability and the pandemic.”

There were no trains between Gateshead Stadium and Jarrow and South Hylton throughout the weekend due to modernisation work, with a bus replacement service running.

The work was completed before the start of service today.
