Tyne Tunnel to close to northbound traffic overt two nights for essential maintenance with diversion over Tyne Bridge

A two-night closure of one side of the Tyne Tunnel is due to start within hours, taking drivers on a diversion through Newcastle city centre.

The northbound side of the route will close from 11pm today, Friday, March 19, until 6am tomorrow and from the same times tomorrow.

The service said: “This is for contractors to undertake essential maintenance of the Northbound Tunnel.

"The southbound tunnel will not be bi-directional.

"We will instead be diverting all northbound traffic over to the Tyne Bridge.

"This closure only effects the off peak hours of 11pm to 6am on the weekend.

"The tunnel is open as normal the rest of the time.

"We apologise for any inconvenience.”
