A technical problem with ticket machines between Park Lane and South Hylton means they are unable to accept credit or debit cards but can still take coins and notes.

The service highlighted the problem on social media first thing this morning, Friday, June 11, with a post on its Twitter feed shortly after 5am which read: “Due to a technical issue the credit/debit card function on the ticket machines between Park Lane-South Hylton is currently unavailable.

"Passengers are advised to use cash if possible.

“The technical issue is also affecting station help points. Staff are working to resolve this.”

Metro has now confirmed the problem is ongoing and while work is under way to repair the ticket machines, advice to anyone wishing to travel on the system this morning is still to carry cash if possible.
