The Great North Air Ambulance confirmed that it landed on the scene at around 2.55pm, with its paramedic and doctor team assisting and treating a patient, who was then airlifted to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said two patients were also transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, by road. The service sent multiple appliances to the scene.

A police spokeswoman said “significant” traffic delays were expected, and said: “At 2.08pm today we received a report of a two-vehicle collision between a car and a truck on the A194 at Blackfell, Washington, near the A195 turn-off.”

Highways England confirmed that the northbound carriageway of the road was closed between junctions two and three, with a diversion in place.

They can then travel north on the A195 to A184, turn onto the A184 eastbound and travel east to A194 Whitemare Pool Interchange to re-join the A194M.

Fire crews from Newcastle Central, Washington and Hebburn stations were also sent to the incident.
