Overturned car causes major delays on A1(M) near Washington Interchange

North East Live Traffic Tweeted shortly before 4pm that lanes two and three of the southbound A1(M) are shut close to the Washington Interchange.

Emergency services are dealing with a car which has been left lying on its side after an earlier collision near Junction 64 of the dual carriageway.

Drivers are being urged to find an alternative route.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 3.15pm today, we received a report of a one vehicle collision on the A1 near Washington services.

"It was reported a Mercedes travelling south has collided with the central reservation, blocked traffic on both sides of the carriageway.

"No one is thought to have sustained any injuries, but motorists are asked to avoid the area while emergency services are in attendance and the debris is cleaned.”
