A Met Office yellow warning for ice covering a stretch of the North East coast from Northumberland to Humberside remains in place until 10 am this morning (Friday, January 20).

With temperatures falling as low as 2C overnight, and feeling like -3C with wind chill, the warning has been in place from 5pm on Thursday (January 19), meaning a high likelihood of icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

The Met Office is urging drivers to make sure they have ice scrapers and de-icer before setting out and be sure to take an in-car phone charger with them in case of break-downs.

Motorists are also being advised to pack warm clothes and blankets, high-visibility clothing in case they need to get out of their vehicle in the dark and to pack food and ideally a flask with a hot drink.

After the frosty start, forecasters predict a largely dry Friday, with sunny spells throughout. It’s set to be breezy along the coast with a chance of a few wintry showers, mostly falling as rain. Temperatures will reach 5°C in Sunderland, dropping to 1°C overnight on Saturday (January 21).
