Police and an ambulance crew attended the A1 near Washington Interchange just after 2pm on Thursday (May 13) following reports of a crash.

One vehicle was pushed into the central reservation and Highways England tweeted that the A1 northbound entry slip from the A195 to J64 had to be temporarily closed, before reopening just before 4 pm.

Northumbria Police have confirmed they were called to a collision on the Sunderland Highway at Washington after 2.35 pm.

A spokesperson said: “Shortly after 2.35pm we received a call that a vehicle had collided into another, pushing the vehicle into the central reservation.”

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called just after 2pm this afternoon to reports of a road traffic collision on the A1 around junction 64.

“We dispatched one ambulance crew and treated one person on scene.”
