A19 road closure after three separate crashes

And drivers are being urged to take care as wintry showers have made road surfaces treacherous with ice and slush across the region for the first time this winter.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 9am today, we received a report of a one-vehicle collision on the A19 northbound near Doxford Park, Sunderland.

“A short time later, we were also made aware of two separate collisions nearby on the same road.

“Thankfully, nobody is believed to be seriously injured and the road is currently closed as a clear-up operation takes place.

"A diversion is in place and drivers are asked to avoid the area.

“We would urge drivers to please take extra care given the adverse weather conditions, slow your speed and leave a larger distance between you and the car in front.”
