The incident left the emergency services with a clear up operation after the fuel leak, as well as the recovery efforts of the vehicles, while motorists faced large queues of traffic through Hartlepool including in Catcote Road.

The southbound carriageway reopened on Monday evening, but the northbound carriageway remained closed overnight before reopening early on Tuesday morning (18 May).

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said on Monday: “The collision resulted in a large fuel spill on the A19 northbound and the road currently remains closed in both directions between the A689 and A179.

“One driver has suffered minor injuries whilst the other two drivers have not been injured.”
