The Black Cats are in desperate need of quality recruits before the transfer window closes next Monday, with boss Sam Allardyce scouting potential targets in Europe over the weekend.

Doumbia has been linked with a move to the North East and reports suggest a move to the Premier League is looking increasingly likely after claims the player has turned down a big money move to China.

French side Marseille have also been credited with an interest in him but it is understood they are looking for a loan deal, while AS Roma would prefer to sell him during this window.

Allardyce has signed Dame N'Doye on loan until the end of the season but the striker didn't get off the bench in the 1-1 draw with AFC Bournemouth and Allardyce has said he wants to sign another forward and another defender.

Doumbia, 28, is a well known name in Europe having joined Russian club CSKA Moscow on loan this season netting eleven times in the process.

The Ivorian striker is unsettled in the Italian capital after finding first team opportunities limited, and is looking to move despite the appointment of a new manager.

Swansea City and Leicester City have also been credited with more than a passing interest in the striker.

Meanwhile, the Black Cats have also been linked with an interest in Juventus star Alvaro Morata.

Although any move looks to be incredibly unlikely given Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and high-flying Leicester City are also reported to be keen on the highly-rated striker.

Morata, who scored 15 goals last season, has struggled to hit the heights of last season after finding his spot in the team under threat by summer signing Paulo Dybala.
