Sunderland roadworks will cause major disruption on the A690, A1231 near Nissan and the Washington interchange

Drivers are advised that essential road resurfacing works will be carried out next week on various routes across Sunderland.

Sunderland drivers are to be hit by more roadworks as resurfacing works have been scheduled on stretches of some of Sunderland’s busiest roads.Works include sections of the A690 Durham Road and overnight works on the A1231 Washington Highway and Nissan interchange.They affected roads are::: Sunday July 21 – A690 Durham Road, in Eden Vale. Daytime works between 7.00am and 6.00pm.:: Monday July 22 – A1231 Sunderland Highway westbound between the Nissan Interchange and Barmston/Spire Road Interchange. Overnight between 7.00pm and 6.00am.:: Tuesday July 23 – A1231 Sunderland Highway westbound between the Nissan Interchange and Barmston/Spire Road Interchange. Overnight between 7.00pm and 6.00am.:: Wednesday July 24 – A1231 Nissan Interchange. Overnight between 7.00pm and 6.00am.:: Thursday July 25 – A1231 Nissan Interchange. Overnight between 7.00pm and 6.00am.:: Friday July 26 – A195 at the A194 Interchange in Washington. Overnight between 7.00pm and 6.00am.Traffic diversions will be in place for the works which are part of the City Council's programme for nearly 250 road and footpath projects over the next financial year.Altogether, a sum of £8.5 million was allocated for highways works as part of the council's budget set earlier this year.Councillor Amy Wilson, the City Council's Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "Maintaining our city's highways and transport links are one of this council's main priorities."In delivering this year’s extensive resurfacing programme, a significant amount of the work was programmed for over the spring and summer and this work continues next week. "We do always plan to minimise any disruption and, on behalf of council staff and contractors, thank you for your patience as we complete these works."The 2019-2020 programme of maintenance works includes stretches of Sunderland's key routes such as the A1231, A183, A690 and dozens of B roads and residential streets across the city's Coalfield, East, North, Washington and West areas.
