A person has been taken to hospital following a road traffic collision which has caused the A19 to be closed for a ‘police led incident’ earlier this morning (December 3).

Following the incident, National Highways North East reported six miles of congestion and that motorists were being diverted off at the A1231 Sunderland and Washington slip road.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) has now confirmed that a person was taken to hospital following the incident.

A spokesperson said: “We received a call at 6.36am this morning to reports of a road traffic incident on the A19 northbound near Sunderland.

“We dispatched two ambulance crews to the scene, and treated and discharged one patient on-scene.

“One other patient was transported to Sunderland Royal hospital for further treatment.”

Following the collision, Northumbria Police also released a statement which said: "Shortly after 6.30am today (Tuesday), we received a report of a collision on the A19 northbound near the South Hylton area of Sunderland.

"Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes where possible.”

In separate incident, which took place on the A19 between the Testos roundabout and Hylton Grange Interchange, a man has sadly died following a suspected hit and run.

National Highways North East have now confirmed the A19 has reopened in both directions.
