The Echo reported last month how the British Boxing Board of Control ordered a “final” title eliminator for the undefeated West Rainton 21-year-old against rival Gamal Yafai.

The 24-year-old Brummie, the Commonwealth champ, though has withdrawn from the purse bid process which should clear the path to challenge the holder, James “Jazza” Dickens.

Ward’s coach, Neil Fannan and manager, Dave Garside, are now awaiting news from the BBBC.

It is the second time the unbeaten Birmingham boxer has pulled out of a contest with Ward.

The pair had been lined up to meet in the spring after the BBBC had ordered a bout for the English belt, doubling as a British eliminator.

After Yafai withdrew to concentrate on the Commonwealth, the governing body instructed Ward’s management team and promoter, Phil Jeffries, to source their own eliminator.

It led to Ward taking on – and beating – Robbie Turley, from Wales, in March and now hopes are high the BBBC will make Dickens v Ward official.
