Residents and community groups in East Boldon are being invited to put their artistic skills to the test by taking part in a Scarecrow competition.

It is the first time the event has been hosted by the Friends of East Boldon Parks and they hope as many people as possible will get behind the contest.

Similar competitions take places throughout the UK and many prove to be crowd pullers - with thousands visiting Martham in Great Yarmouth earlier this year to see the range of scarecrows on display.

Already, more than 50 applications have been received by the group from people eager to take part while the figures made from straw have been seen popping in gardens around the village.

However, there is still time for people to get involved. People have until August 3 to register to take part, entry is £3, with the main event taking place on September 15.

Secretary Rebecca Higgins said: “We have held a fun day annually for a number of years now and the feedback from people, this year, was that they wanted to see something different.

“We will still be having the fun day, but we will also be having a Scarecrow competition too.

“It’s an idea which will hopefully bring more footfall into the village. We have families and community groups working together on their own creations - it’s a bit of fun that everyone can get involved in.

“We have already got a number of applications in already and when we held the picnic in the park people were asking all about it.

“We also have a lot of support from businesses in the area.”

Application forms can be downloaded from the groups Facebook page or by calling into Blacks Corner, Village Chemist, No 4 and The Coffee Station.

Meanwhile, the friends group are also launching an appeal for more volunteers to get on board and join them.

Mrs Higgins added: “The friends group is also looking for more people to join us and become volunteers - not just with this event but in general.

“If anyone would like to join us we would love to hear from them.”
