Three arrested in connection with Washington '˜bomb' drama

Three people have been arrested in connection with a '˜bomb' drama in Washington.

Northumbria Police say they have arrested the trio after a device exploded under a parked car in the town.

At 11.20pm on Monday, November 7, police got reports of a loud bang in the Compton Court area.

Officers found a suspected improvised explosive device had been placed under the back of a car in the street.

The car was damaged as a result of the bang and the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team attended to ensure the device was made safe.

Since the incident police have been carrying out enquiries to identify those suspected of being involved.

And, on Thursday night three men, two aged 32 and one 28, were arrested on suspicion of firearms offences.

Supt Brad Howe, said: “The device was deliberately placed on the vehicle in a targeted attack and, while no-one was injured and it only caused minimal damage to the vehicle, we have taken the incident very seriously.

“I want to reassure local residents that since the incident we have been doing everything we can to identify those suspected of being involved. A dedicated team of officers have worked tirelessly carrying out enquiries which last night led to three arrests.

“Officers will remain in the area over the next few days to speak with local residents and offer reassurance.”
