Thousands stay away, Sunderland boss under increasing pressure plus four other things learned from Swansea defeat

Defeat to Swansea City summed up everything that has been wrong with Sunderland; with a lack of concentration, lack of effort from some and poor decision making littering another dire display.

Here's what we learned from the final home game of the season:

David Moyes comes under increasing pressure:

It was another uncomfortable afternoon for Moyes at the Stadium of Light, with owner Ellis Short watching on from the director's box.

Chants for the manager to go started in earnest after Fernando Llorente's ninth minute opener, they subsided but were soon cranked up again when Kyle Naughton made it two.

And it was more sustained in the second half, with the players booed off at the final whistle.

Moyes is due to meet with Short and chief executive Martin Bain next week once the season is finished to thrash out a way forward.

This was the last chance for the home support to make their feelings towards the Scot known, and they took it.

Right decision not to play the youngsters?

Moyes opted against giving any of the club's younger Under-23 players a place in the squad, with Lynden Gooch the only youngster on the bench, George Honeyman out with a back injury.

There was no room for Josh Maja, Elliot Embleton or Joel Asoro. Elliott Dickman's side have a huge cup final against Porto on Wednesday night.

Many had called for the younger players to be given a chance but with a big cup final coming up, Moyes was right not to throw them in for a meaningless league game against Swansea.

There is no excuse not to give them some game time at Chelsea, though. The first team have had enough chances.

Thousands of fans stay away. Again.

It has become a regular sight at the Stadium of Light in the last couple of home games, thousands of empty seats.

The official attendance - including season ticket sales - was 38,781 but clearly thousands of season ticket holders had decided to stay away. Who could blame them?

The Championship will herald a new era with a new team - hopefully a winning one - and hopefully the sight of a packed Stadium of Light.

For now, though, the sight of empty red - and pink - seats has become a familiar one in recent weeks. For many, patience has finally ran out.

Sunderland lost midfield battle. Again:

Sunderland had an early mountain to climb once Llorente gave Swansea the lead following Jordan Pickford's mistake.

The reaction to going behind was again woeful, with Swansea's midfield able to knock the ball around at will.

They weren't put under enough pressure by pitiful Sunderland, with Leon Britton and Ki Sung-Yueng able to dominate. It was far too easy.

Sunderland's patched-together midfield has been woeful all season, with only Didier Ndong gaining much credit but he had a poor game against Swansea too.

Sad way for Jermain Defoe to go out:

Sunderland have now failed to score in 19 Premier League games this season - 19!

With two games of the campaign left, no other side has failed to score in more games this season and just goes to highlight the problems facing the Black Cats.

Jermain Defoe has netted 15 league goals but remains three shy of his best ever tally. With Arsenal and then Chelsea away to play, he'll do well to achieve that.

Defoe, who can leave on a free this summer in the wake of relegation, has been a superb servant for Sunderland.

His last game at the Stadium of Light ended with him and Vito Mannone applauding a virtually empty stadium after the latest home defeat. A sad way to go out.

Injury woe sums up season:

One of the few mitigating factors for the dire 2016-17 campaign has been the amount of injuries. And Sunderland were hit with another two on Saturday.

Both Jason Denayer and Victor Anichebe going off injured in the first half, will we see either again in a Sunderland shirt?

With Manchester City loanee Denayer heading back to the North West and Anichebe out of contract, it would appear unlikely.

Anichebe has missed too much football this season and Moyes has already stated the need for robust players in the Championship next season.
