1) The Mad Hatter, Sea Road, Fulwell

"Love is all around when it comes to this gem of a cafe" were the words of one reviewer for this canny cafe, whose Alice's Adventures in Wonderland-inspired name is a nod to writer Lewis Carroll's links to Sunderland.

The cafe serves highly applauded breakfasts and lunches as well as a full range of coffees with all the classics.

4) Penshaw Tea Rooms, Chester Road

As far as settings go, you can't get much better in Sunderland, sat next to Penshaw Hill and overlooking Herrington Country Park.

It's location makes it a great place to refresh yourself after an explore of some of the city's best countryside.

10) Doggie Diner, Sea Road, Sunderland

The friendliest of dog-friendly cafes, with a dedicated menu for canine customers.

We loved this review, which pretty much sums the place up: "Had our pugs first birthday party here and he was totally spoiled.

"He got afternoon doggie tea which he loved along with a party hat. Human food is lovely too and we are always made to feel welcome."
