A teenager was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries following a quad bike crash in Sunderland.

A 19-year-old man was seriously injured after the quad bike he was riding left the road at the junction of the city’s Baxter Road and Bergen Street shortly before 7pm on Wednesday, May 6.

Police officers were called to the scene by the North East Ambulance Service, which took the rider to hospital with serious head injuries.

They are not believed to be life-threatening at this time. An investigation has now been launched as Northumbria Police looks to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

The force has asked for any witnesses to come forward.

Pc Steven Hackett, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: “This was a serious incident that has left a young man with a significant head injury.

“He remains in hospital and his family are being supported by specialist family liaison officers at this time.

“We are carrying out a range of inquiries as we ascertain what caused this collision and the events that immediately preceded the rider coming off his quad bike.

“I would now ask anybody who saw the incident, or believes they saw the rider in the area in the moments before the collision, to come forward as soon as possible.”
