Teachers go viral with Man's Not Hot leaver's rap

When year six pupils from The Ribbon Academy in Murton settled down for their leavers’ assembly with their parents little did they think they’d see their teachers and other school staff breaking into a rendition of the novelty song by Big Shaq.

The catchy, comedy song has become a hit with the year group who’d been singing it all year, so staff decided to make them a special video as the youngsters prepared for their next chapter at secondary school, which has been viewed more than 18,000 times on Facebook and shared hundreds of times.

Lee Bowdler, IT technician and classroom support at the school in Barnes Road, teamed up with year six teachers Natalie Ruddell and Amy Duke for the video, which also featured cameos from other teachers, cleaning staff, lunchtime supervisors and senior management.

He said: “The song’s been massively popular with the year group who’ve been singing it all year. They’ve also been singing it when they practise for their Maths Sats because of the line ‘two plus two is four, minus one that’s three, quick maths’.

“They’ve been a great year group and the leavers’ assembly is always emotional, so we wanted to do something to make them smile. At first we showed them a montage of pictures of them from nursery right up to year six, then we pretended there was a problem with transmission before showing the rap video.

“It starts off quite cheery and then the receptionist answers the phone to Big Shaq. They thought it was hilarious and weren’t expecting it at all. “Hopefully it’s something they’ll always remember.”
