Sunderland-based Kathleen Knox School of Dance is celebrating being shortlisted for the finals of the prestigious Barbara Sharples' International Choreographic Award, which takes place in Manchester in September.

The two shortlisted routines, choreographed by former pupil Matthew Banks, will feature in the dance school’s forthcoming show Lights, Camera, Action! at the Sunderland Empire Theatre this Sunday.

Speaking about their achievements and forthcoming show, school principal Kathleen Knox said: “I am thrilled with the success of my former pupils – many of them are now enjoying professional careers ranging from residencies in theatres and on cruise ships to dancing at Disneyland, whilst another has just been announced as a cast member for the touring production of Kinky Boots.

“Our production at the Empire this weekend is a great way to showcase the hard work and commitment that the pupils put into their performance skills.

“There’s something for everyone in this show which includes singing and dancing to numbers from The Greatest Showman, Dream Girls, Hamilton, Kiss Me Kate and The Producers.

Performers in the show range in age from three years to adults and for the first time we are featuring some special guests – Pop Choir Project.

“I’m really excited for people to see what the performers are capable of – there’s a variety of dance styles on offer and I promise a great evening of entertainment. I think the audience will be impressed by the professionalism of the pupils and will see just why we’ve been shortlisted for the choreographic award.”
