Tale of social history

Did you know that Boots the Chemist once had subscription libraries within its stores?

Established in 1899 by Florence Boot, these libraries thrived for 67 years. Their heyday was during the inter-war years, when more than 400 branches flourished throughout the UK. Sunderland was home to one of these branches.

My book “Lipsticks and Library Books” tells the story of Boots Booklovers Library. It is a unique piece of social history and an enjoyable read.

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my letter in the Sunderland Echo asking former subscribers and members of staff to contact her.

The appeal resulted in many interesting and entertaining anecdotes and the book has played its part in reuniting friends and colleagues who lost touch over the years.

Lipsticks and Library Books is available from Amazon in Kindle and paperback or from me on 019 29 459207.
