Lens - who impressed in last weekend's FA Cup third round defeat at Arsenal - retained his place in the starting XI, with Adam Johnson also included after the ex-Manchester City man took the place of Duncan Watmore out wide.

John O'Shea was passed fit after a scare over a calf injury, with the Sunderland captain partnering ex-Manchester United team-mate Wes Brown in defence.
