Vito Mannone: 5. Sent the wrong way for the penalty. And could do little about Ayew's precise finish. Had a nightmare second half, almost cost Sunderland.

Billy Jones: 6. Put in some feisty challenges first half, didn't get anywhere near Ayew for the goal.

John O’Shea: 6. Nervy moments in opening 10 minutes, Sunderland got away with it though. Much improved as the game wore on.

Wes Brown: 6. Gave away the penalty but it was never a foul. Ayew kicked the floor. Decent display from Brown.

Patrick van Aanholt: 7. Modou Barrow gave him a tough time first half, again positive going forward though, just lacked a final ball. Did really well for the goal, deflected off Fernandez.

Lee Cattermole: 5. Beaten far too easily for Ayew's goal. The forward moved past him like he wasn't even there. Not his best game. Subbed.

Yann M’Vila: 6. Poor passing and couldn't find his range in the first half. Sloppy in build-up to Swansea goal. Improved second half but maybe in need of a rest?

Adam Johnson: 7. Huge miss shortly after Defoe had put Sunderland 1-0 up. Blasted his shot well, well wide. Nice ball to play in van Aanholt to make it 2-2 and impressed second half.

Jeremain Lens: 8. Played in the Number 10 role again, behind Defoe. Did his defensive duties too. Showed some nice touches, always wanted the ball and to attack.

Fabio Borini: 7. Put a real shift in for his side. Did a lot of running. Didn't have a sight on goal though. Subbed late on.

Jermain Defoe: 9. MOM. Led line really well and scored hat-trick, second a cool finish. First two goals offside but officials didn't spot either and Defoe capitalised.
