A police cordon was put in place at King’s Place and Paxton Terrace, Millfield, after a ‘suspicious package’ was found in a back lane. Officers were called shortly before 12.40pm on Sunday, August 16. A controlled explosion has been carried out although Northumbria Police has confirmed they believe the incident to be a hoax. A force spokesman said: “We now believe the item to be part of a hoax and that it posed no threat to the public. Forensic analysis will be carried out on what is left of the item to see if those involved can be identified.”
