Sunderland's Remembrance Parade and Service details released

Here's what you need to know if you would like to be part of the commemorations:

When should I get there?

:: Anyone attending should be in place at the war memorial in Burdon Road by 10.15am.

:: If you're driving, remember there are road closures from 9.30am.

:: Seating is limited, so get there soon after 9am if you don't want to stand.

Who is taking part?

:: The parade will be led by The Band of the Royal Corps of Signals and the Bearpark and Esh Colliery Band.

:: Forces units taking part in this year's parade include: The 4th Regiment Royal Artillery (Sunderland's adopted regiment), 21 Engineer Regiment, The Light Dragoons, 5 Armoured Medical Regiment, RAF Boulmer and 3 Rifles.

:: The 4th Regiment Royal Artillery, which exercised its freedom of the city in July, is providing the largest contingent in the parade this year.

::The 4th Regiment is also providing two field guns which will be fired from the terrace in Mowbray Park to signal the start of the two minute silence at 11 am and Regimental Sergeant Major WOI Sean Armstrong who is co-ordinating the parade.

What is happening?

:: Veteran George Waller, who served in the RAF in World War II, will recite the first four verses of the famous war poem 'For the Fallen' before the two minute silence.

:: He will be followed by veteran Len Gibson, a member of 125 Anti Tank Regiment Royal Artillery who was a prisoner of war on the notorious ‘Death Railway’ in Burma. Mr Gibson will recite the Far Eastern Prisoner of War Prayer before the wreath laying.

:: The parade will end in a march past of veterans and serving members of Her Majesty's Forces.

:: The salute will be taken by Lt Col Rob Alston MBE RA, Deputy Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Colonel Ann Clouston, OBE, ARRC, TD DL and the Mayor of Sunderland, Cllr Alan Emerson from the steps of the Museum in Borough Road.

Who can attend?

:: Members of the public are welcome to attend. Anyone thinking of coming along is advised to dress warmly.

:: A limited amount of seating is available in the tiered seating from 9am. Access to the disabled platform is available from the same time.

How can I get there?

:: Public transport operate as normal, bar bus services going through road closure areas

:: Road closures are in place from 9.30 am – with access to Civic Car Park from Park Lane only after this point.

:: Parking in the Civic Centre car will be available free of charge.

Is anything happening on Armistice Day itself?

:: At 11 am next Friday 11 November, residents and visitors to the city are being asked to pause for a two minute silence to mark Armistice Day which signalled the end of the First world War in 2018.

:: Everyone in the city is invited to join Sunderland City Council staff in observing the two minute silence. Maroons (explosive charges) will sound at 11am, and again at 11.02 from Mowbray Park to bring the observance to an end.

A message from Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Alan Emerson:

"Remembrance Sunday is an opportunity for the whole city to come together to pay tribute to those who fought in conflicts past and present and the many who gave up their lives for their country.

"It is particularly poignant this year that we celebrate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme in which my grandfather served and was one of thousands missing in action from day 1 of the battle.

"It is equally important that we use this occasion to honour the servicemen and women of today and let them know how much we value what they do and appreciate the sacrifices they make on our behalf.

"The sad loss of those young men from this city who have lost their lives in recent conflicts will be especially close to our hearts as we remember all those who have paid the ultimate price."
