Temporary Chief Superintendent Ged Noble said: “This new police base ensures we maintain a highly visible police presence in the city centre, with staff close to the communities they serve, including the busy Bridges retail centre and the city’s night time economy bars and clubs, this is a priority for the force. “The neighbourhood team are looking forward to building even stronger links with residents, visitors and businesses alike, please do stop and speak to an officer when you see them on patrol in our city centre.”

The city council has taken over Gillbridge as part of redevelopment plans for the area.

Deputy leader of Sunderland City Council Councillor Harry Trueman said: “The council is currently finalising its acquisition of the Gillbridge Station site as part of its comprehensive and ongoing scheme of improvements to the city centre.

“As well as development opportunities linked to Keel Square and Vaux, plans for the site include a new access road to help open up the Minster Quarter Area, improve traffic movements and assist with further regeneration.”
