Sunderland v Liverpool won't be moved after Premier League reject Reds request

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was unhappy that his side had to play Manchester City at teatime on New Year’s Eve before heading to Wearside less than 48-hours later for the game with Sunderland.

Their clash with City was moved as it will be screened live by BT Sport.

The Premier League considered Liverpool’s request but turned it down over concerns it would set a dangerous precedent to make a change for one club, given Man City also play on January 2.

The game at the Stadium of Light is also Sunderland’s only home game over the festive schedule, which was a factor.

Klopp was angry about the schedule his side face over the festive period after BT Sport selected the New Year’s Eve game between Liverpool and City for live broadcast.

An angry Klopp, speaking in October, said: “Now I have seen the fixtures and I am not too happy.

“We have less than 48 hours between our game against Man City on December 31 and in Sunderland on the 2nd. Forty-eight hours is an interesting idea but less than 48 hours I cannot believe.

“I learn more and more about this league and maybe I have to ask someone if we can ask if there will be another time for us at Sunderland.

“Our job is to do everything we can to win games. I understand tradition - I would never say Boxing Day is not a good idea as I love it and I have absolutely no problem.

“But now having a matchday with two days between there should be another possibility.”

Sunderland are away to Manchester United on Boxing Day before their New Year’s Eve clash at Burnley. David Moyes’ side then face Liverpool at home on Monday, January 2 (3pm kick-off).
