Gibson, who was fined by the club, admits on the show that he felt he'd let himself and the club down, while then-chief executive Martin Bain called his comments 'unacceptable' and admitted he was lucky to still be playing for the club.

Bain was interviewed by documentary makers at the time of Gibson's first offence, which came just days before the start of the season.

He said: "It just makes you feel sick. It's a negative at the start of the season when you have tried to build so many positives.

"There's enough negatives coming out of the Premier League and the issues you have. You think you have put that behind you and then Darron Gibson does something that's totally unacceptable to me, Sunderland Football Club and any Sunderland supporters.

"When I spoke to Simon (Grayson), both of us were disappointed in him and at a stage in pre-season when everyone was focused on getting fit.

"He got fined and in fairness to him, he voluntarily apologised and was remorseful.

"He admits he made a mistake and is probably a fortunate boy to still be playing for the football club."

Gibson was subsequently sacked later that season after a drink drive conviction when he crashed his car into a number of parked vehicles on the way to the Stadium of Light for a home game.

The first episode also features interviews with Lee Cattermole, ex-manager Simon Grayson, John O'Shea and Jason Steele, along with fans and backroom staff at the club as they build up to the start of the first game of the new season in the aftermath of relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

It sets the scene for the series which follows Sunderland through the Championship, with future episodes to include the August 2017 deadline day, Grayson's sacking and Chris Coleman's appointment, plus relegation to League One and Stewart Donald's takeover.

'Sunderland 'Til I Die', produced by Fulwell73, is released on Friday, December 14 on Netflix with all eight episodes available.
